In the Spring of 2010 Dr. John Monroe, senior pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Taylors, SC, met with Jim and Pat Berg and Larry and Charlene Pierson to discuss the possibility of starting an addiction ministry as an outreach and discipleship ministry of Faith Baptist Church. Larry and Charlene agreed to pray about directing such a ministry.

God had uniquely equipped Larry and Charlene for this role. While working on his undergraduate degree at Bob Jones University Larry served at the Greenville Rescue Mission. Upon graduation they did some missions work and then became key servants in a Christian residential ministry to those in bondage to life-dominating sins and stubborn habits.

Larry was the director of the resident facilities and traveled to other churches on the weekends training pastors and volunteer workers to have such a ministry through their own local churches. The Piersons had recently returned to Greenville, where their children attended Bob Jones University.

During the summer of 2010, God providentially brought several addicts across Jim's path. He began working with them individually but soon added Friday night meetings at the church. He wanted them to feel comfortable at Faith Baptist Church - a place where they would hear God's Word faithfully proclaimed and applied by Pastor Monroe, and a place where they would find welcome support from members of the church, and from the pastoral staff.

Attendance at the Friday night meetings grew, and Larry and Charlene answered God's call to help the ministry mature.

Jim continued to refine the curriculum, and it was published in November 2011. Faith Baptist Church became the home base for Freedom That Lasts® and now seeks to help other churches charter the program to reach their communities with the good news that Jesus Christ is the only source of freedom that lasts.
